Tilsac

You can go climbing in Tilburg with the Tilburg Student Alpine Club (TilSAC). This is an association where members engage in both top-rope climbing and bouldering, not only in the climbing gym and two bouldering facilities in Tilburg but also frequently in the outdoors abroad. In addition to helping each other during climbing sessions and climbing weekends, members also enjoy social activities, make new friends, and participate in events like gatherings and workshops. Are you curious and want to learn more about the climbing club? Keep reading!

The Association

The Tilburg Student Alpine Club (TilSAC) is the association for anyone interested in any form of climbing. This association has approximately 100 members, offering great discounts at various climbing facilities in Tilburg, and it comprises a diverse range of personalities and nationalities. Because the active members are a small, open, and helpful group of people, it's easy to make friends.

Within the alpine sport, there are various subdisciplines. There's Toprope, Speed Climbing, and Bouldering. In Toprope, you follow a long route while being secured by a rope, focusing on endurance and long-distance climbing. Speed Climbing involves ascending the same route as quickly as possible, emphasizing muscle memory and speed. Bouldering is much more technical, done without a rope and often featuring more overhangs, making it more challenging.

Climbing

Climbing may seem like an individual sport, but it's actually a bit of a team sport. Toprope climbing is always done with someone belaying you. That's why you need a certification to engage in Toprope climbing, which you can obtain through TilSAC or, at the beginning of the year, through the sports center.

Bouldering is something anyone can try in one of the two facilities in Tilburg. TilSAC is also in discussions to set up training sessions for this, but often, members already go together to help each other with routes. This makes it very easy to connect with the climbing community since you all share the same hobby and enjoy assisting each other.

Climbing also provides you with a full-body workout, as you use your legs, arms, and core. However, it's also highly mental because you need to figure out how to move along the route effectively.

Climbing is like solving a puzzle with your body. By trying different things, you do your best to navigate the route as effectively as possible

Climbing Weekends

Several times a year, we organize climbing weekends, mainly in the summer. We often go with 10 to 15 people and a certified climbing instructor to a location in Belgium, Germany, or France for outdoor climbing.

Outdoor climbing is quite different from indoor climbing because there, you have colored holds and specific routes to follow. Outdoors, you have the entire wall at your disposal to use as you wish. It's much more creative and quite different, and it can be more challenging because there isn't a clearly marked route.

Additionally, we usually stay together at a campground, which provides ample space for socializing and getting to know each other. Besides climbing, we also enjoy evenings by the campfire and, when the weather is nice, we go swimming. The costs are quite low because we often bring all the equipment, tents, and climbing gear ourselves.

Climbing activities

In addition to climbing and weekends, we also have other activities. Every now and then, we enjoy a social gathering in the bar at Neoliet, and the first drink is on TilSAC. Last year, we visited an old cooling plant, which now houses a climbing park, with the association.

We also have a movie night and sleepover planned in the climbing gym soon. First, we set up a large screen in the gym to watch a movie, and then we all stay the night there. We have excellent relationships with Neoliet because some of our members work there. This allows us to often bring our ideas to life.

Furthermore, in almost every other student city in the Netherlands, there's a student alpine association, and we sometimes have weekends or activities together, which is always a lot of fun and very enjoyable.

Social Activities

In addition to climbing-related activities, we also do things just for fun. In the picture, you can see the casino night, where we had a casino evening with some drinks at one of the members' homes. We also have the "budget spending party" every year. This is a party organized by the activities committee to give back the profits of that year to our members, which can include events like a cocktail party.

Furthermore, we have various other activities, such as a scuba dive workshop led by one of our members. Another time, we went ice skating. During the climbing weekends, there's naturally plenty of time for other activities besides climbing, like cooking together, playing games, and visiting a nearby town, for example.
