Lustrum Olof

The theme unveiling of the XIXth (19th) lustrum of student association Olof took place on Wednesday, October 6. The so-called lustrum committee is responsible for organizing the lustrum and all related activities. We spoke with Nova and Stan, part of the lustrum organization, about what a lustrum actually entails, the chosen theme, and the connection - of Olof and its lustrum - with Tilburg as a city.

WHAT IS A LUSTRUM?

"A lustrum is the five-year anniversary of an association. Every year there is a 'dies', which is the annual anniversary. Every five years there is a 'lustrum' and that anniversary is celebrated extra big."

Olof was founded in 1927. So they will celebrate their 95th anniversary and thus their 19th lustrum. As mentioned, this will be done in a large-scale manner, with the themed unveiling as the kickoff.

WHAT IS THE THEME?

"The theme is 'Synchronous - Play for Two'. We came up with that because for the past year and a half, because of Covid, we haven't really been able to do anything. So from that direction, we started brainstorming together: What do you do at Olof? What do you think about then? Then you think of a party, of all being together, now that it is possible again. By having stood still for so long we are now also going to enjoy, party, and live 2x as hard: play for two."

DOES THE THEME FIT TILBURG AS A CITY?

"The unveiling video of the theme (see below) shows well what we want to achieve with the theme: Together at one moment in time. We live together, at the same time, with the inhabitants of Tilburg. So we live synchronously with each other. In the film, you see all kinds of Tilburg residents passing by: The owner of Heuvel Chicken, the cleaning lady of Olof, student pastor Hub, and the tailor, King's Tailor, on the Tuinstraat. They are all Tilburgers who have a link with Olof. Hence together at one moment in time, in other words: synchronous."

HOW HAS OLOF PROFILED ITSELF WITHIN TILBURG?

The lustrum organization gives us the following explanation: "Tilburg used to be a textile city. That character is still there, but over the years the real textile production slowly moved away. A number of Catholics wanted a university to come to Brabant. That was pretty hard to accomplish. At some point they founded the Roman Catholic Trade High School and at the same time Olof. After the university was founded, Tilburg went into a boom. If you went to study at the university, you automatically became a member of Olof and thus Olof has been very connected to the university and city. So Olof goes hand in hand with the university. The university makes the city of Tilburg and Olof in turn facilitates a wide range of activities for the student and for the city."

WHAT WAS THE THEME UNVEILING ITSELF LIKE?

"We didn't want to choose a 'standard' location," Stan explains. "'De Kroeg' (Olof's usual pub) therefore fell through. We came to one of the bigger, more typical, and more famous locations in Tilburg: Poppodium 013. That seemed cool to us, because we wanted it to be big. The goal was that everyone would feel that the real lustrum week (July 13-24, 2022) is going to be awesome. We think we succeeded pretty well."

With performances by large and small artists, the necessary confetti, and a large number of visitors, the photos do indeed speak for themselves and it looks successful.

WHAT DOES SUCH A LUSTRUM YEAR LOOK LIKE?

"You have a twelve-day lustrum week, which includes a VVV day, a family day, and a day for our sister associations. In addition, there is a ski trip, a lustrum symposium, and a Tilburg day," Nova tells us.

"So the normal year does continue. The lustrum year is an extra addition, in which the focus is on bigger activities. Everyone makes sure that he or she can attend these activities. That makes the lustrum year special."

WHAT IS THE TILBURG DAY?

Stan says: "On this day we want to give something back to the people of Tilburg. It will take place at an iconic, public Tilburg location. It is a day, where there is something for everyone. We would like to attach a charity to it. The goal of the day will be to make the connection between the residents of Tilburg and the student stronger again."

They want to emphasize that every citizen of Tilburg can and may celebrate the lustrum with them. Olof owes its existence to Tilburg and therefore they like to celebrate the lustrum together with the people of Tilburg.

WHY MUST YOU EXPERIENCE A LUSTRUM?

"A lustrum is once every five years. The average student studies for five years. So in principle you only experience a lustrum once in your student life. It's going to be one of the best moments of your college days because it's something so defining and memorable," Stan indicates. "That makes it bold for us, as an organization, to be able to organize a year that everyone has been waiting for for years."
