Sauron

This week, we spoke with the student sports association Sauron. This is the badminton association for students in Tilburg, and they train on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at various skill levels. Wednesday evening is the club night when all members train together and enjoy a friendly get-together with drinks at O'Cafe. The board this year consists of members from four different nationalities, and this diversity is also reflected in the association as members come from all over the world. Besides playing badminton, they also learn a lot about each other's cultures and daily lives. Interested in learning more about this association? Read on!

Badminton Training

We have 2 training nights a week. On Tuesdays we have training courses for different levels. At 8:00 the intermediate and advanced training and at 9:00 we have beginners.  On Wednesday, we have our club nights. So basically it's for our club members where we mix up all the levels.  And just playing for fun and without thinking too much and Tuesdays are more about like footwork, and the technical stuff.

Badminton can be played in 5 main categories. So, women's and men’s singles, women and men's doubles, and then mixed doubles with one female, one male. And usually during our club nights we play doubles, so they can help each other. To play with people who are better helps to improve to newcomers who are just beginning to get acknowledged with badminton.

Wednesday is clubnight

Wednesdays are more about having fun. So, after club night, we have drinks in the O’cafe which is next to the Sports Center. That is the moment where our community bonds. You maybe order some snacks and then you can chill. You can talk to each other. Sometimes people play board games.

And yeah, and that's how you get to know the association, get to know the people that you play with, which is really nice. So, you also get to know the people and the personalities we have. And we have very different personalities from very different backgrounds, from Asia, from Europe. And while communicating and while talking with them, you get to know different countries. Not only about badminton or like specific person, but also what, how they do things and in Asia, America and other European countries.

Sauron is more than just badminton association, the community that we have created, where we just do what we love and have fun in a good atmosphere

Board and Members

We have a variety of different nationalities in the board, but also the same goes for the whole club. The last board created such a nice atmosphere. Everyone felt like they could have some fun and they were not afraid to, make mistakes while playing because we know that everyone is very supportive. Everyone wanted to help, and that was very inviting to join in.

So, one of our goals for this year's board is to make everyone feel very welcome and have that comfortable nice environment where after a long day studying all day and doing the stuff that you do or work and you can just come and do some sports, have some fun and get some good energy. It is going way further than just the sport we all play, we want to know how you live your life, how studying is going.

Extra activities

We are trying to have at least one activity a month besides, like badminton or our regular training. Just a fun activity, maybe go on some trip or play some laser tag or pool or something like that. Last year, there was a game arcade night which was a great success too.

And to meet some people and for teamwork we join Carnival Tournament with Fosst where we join in with a team to play volleyball and have fun. And last Sunday we volunteered with some members at the 10 miles marathon in Tilburg.

And there's always racketlon. Basically, it's an event where you do badminton, table tennis, tennis and squash. And everyone does all four different sports. Most of the people haven't played all the sports before, so they just go, they try it for the first time. You just try it out and at the same time you have some fun and maybe a chance to win something or you realize that like, you're good at tennis.

 Yonex Dutch Open

Each year we go to the Yonex Dutch Open, this is where the professional players compete. We watch how they move, how they play, their techniques, how they arrange. Sometimes we discuss and analyze the matches together. Last year it was really nice because you learn really a lot and get to know the (new) members because it is in October already. It’s also a great way to connect with everyone and to see each other next to the badminton training.
