ALL too HUMAN festival

On October 28th, the third edition of the ALL too HUMAN festival will take place at De Nieuwe Vorst. It's a wonderful collaboration between the university's philosophy department and Krakers, bringing together philosophy, art, education, and celebration in a festival. This year's theme is "Rewriting History," focusing on inclusion and diversity. We had a conversation with the organizers. Read the article to learn more about how all these different components are incorporated into this festival in Tilburg.

What is the ALL too HUMAN festival all about?

ALL too HUMAN is a one-day festival dedicated to education, philosophy, art, music, and, importantly, a festive program, all centered around the themes of diversity and inclusion. We have noticed that these themes sometimes evoke resistance and negativity, and we aim to approach them in a positive and celebratory manner during ALL too HUMAN, without losing sight of their complexity.

The festival, now in its third edition, is scheduled for October 28, 2023. This year's theme is "Rewriting History." During ALL too HUMAN, we create space for a critical (re)examination, the exploration of each other's perspectives, and listening to untold stories from history. This year, the focus is on themes related to diversity, inclusion, and all their facets. We explore these themes through the lens of philosophy, in a way that we hope everyone can engage with. Additionally, we seek to incorporate philosophy into non-traditional disciplines, such as visual arts, workshops, and performances. In summary, if you want to celebrate diversity and find inspiration, ALL too HUMAN is the festival for you!

How do education, philosophy, art, and celebration come together at the festival?

The ALL too HUMAN festival demonstrates that terms like "philosophy" and "education" need not carry a serious, dry, or academic undertone. It shows that these topics can be celebrated just as festively as any other. Attendees can learn from impressive theater performances, art installations, and classic lectures alike. The festival's primary focus is on celebrating all aspects of diversity, which is why it includes opportunities for people to enjoy festivities like DJ performances or live bands.

How did the collaboration between the university's philosophy department and Krakers lead to the ALL too HUMAN festival?

The collaboration between the university's philosophy department and Krakers led to the creation of the ALL too HUMAN festival through Minorities and Philosophy (MAP) Tilburg, which is part of an international student network addressing structural inequality in academic philosophy and striving for greater inclusivity within and beyond the university. The partnership came about when MAP Tilburg was planning a festival day in 2021, and Krakers, with their similar target audience, became involved. Theater de Nieuwe Vorst was chosen as the ideal venue for the festival, cementing the collaboration.

An integral aspect of diversifying philosophy, one of the festival's goals, is to ensure that it is accessible and moves beyond the academic ivory tower.

Does the festival align well with Tilburg, and if so, why?

Tilburg is truly a hidden gem. There is so much happening here, with numerous beautiful initiatives and inspiring creators enriching the city. De Nieuwe Vorst and Krakers play crucial roles in providing opportunities for creators and initiatives to flourish. We've been fortunate to receive this opportunity as well, and we're immensely grateful for it. Additionally, we're fortunate to have a fantastic philosophy department in Tilburg. They are deeply engaged in promoting diversity within the curriculum and provide tremendous support to us, Minorities And Philosophy, which may differ from more conservative universities. We find it unique that such opportunities exist in Tilburg, and we hope that our festival contributes to the continued growth of this beautiful city.

How will the theme of diversity and inclusion be integrated into the festival?

Every lecture, performance, and program element at the festival will be linked to the theme of diversity and inclusion. Moreover, the theme of "rewriting history" will be explored, shedding light on how diverse voices have been granted more space than others throughout history. For example, there will be lectures on the hidden history of disability, the colonial influences on traditional African dance, and the role of DJs in shaping the musical landscape and excluding certain artists. Workshops will also allow the audience to engage in activities like reimagining their own personal history using collage techniques.
