Asset General

Meet Asset. This is one of the largest study associations in Europe. Yes, you heard that right, Europe. With almost 6000 members, of which 800 are active, that makes sense. Asset focuses on three pillars of social cohesion, study support and career development. You can see that in everything. But this association is more than that. We talked to Ilayda and Shaye. They told us all the ins and outs of Asset and its departments. Read more below.

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO AT ASSET?

"I am Ilayda and I am the chairman of Asset. In that position I am responsible for 'Internal Affairs' and 'External Affairs' towards the university and other associations, both in Tilburg and nationally. In addition, I am also there to make the policy and to see that the policy is implemented."

"I am Shaye and I am the Public Relations Coordinator and Vice-Chairman of Asset. So my duties are mainly to keep in touch with our regular pub, arrange TOP week and set up all the big events. In addition, I also coordinate all the 'Vice-Chairmans'."

WHAT IS ASSET IN THE BASICS?

"Asset is an abbreviation for Association for Students Studying Economics in Tilburg. This eventually became Asset, which is of course very appropriate for an economic study association. In total we have 800 active members."

"Then you have Asset General. That is really the contact to the outside world and exists as an entity with statutes. Under that fall the departments, which are subdivided by discipline. The MAK and the EBT also fall under Asset General. We have three pillars that we focus on, namely 'social cohesion', 'study support' and 'career development'."

"We have sides that can be very much like a student union, like the informal activities, but we pay equal attention to the formal side through career events."

"We have activities that we do with the whole faculty, like the COdE cantus at Vidar. We also have activities for each field of study, which are organised by different departments for all fields of study."

What is the structure of Asset like?

"For each field of study you have a department, such as IBA, Strategic Management and Econometrics. There are seven departments in total. They all have their own board. All the chairmen of the boards of the departments also sit on the Asset General board. They then have a different function than chairman. They are responsible for all the same functions in all the departments. So it is quite a tricky story!"

WE HAVE SIDES THAT CAN BE VERY SIMILAR TO A STUDENT UNION, SUCH AS THE INFORMAL ACTIVITIES, BUT WE PAY JUST AS MUCH ATTENTION TO THE FORMAL SIDE THROUGH CAREER EVENTS

WHAT IS THE FORMAL AND INFORMAL SIDE OF ASSET?

"From Asset General we have taken a step back from the formal side, because a lot is already organised. On the other hand, we do have various events, such as the Warandelezing, Food for Thought and the EBT. The nice thing about the formal side is that it is professional. That makes it much more relevant and enjoyable for the students, because that is where their interests lie. The departments know what is needed and what is going on."

"At the Asset General level, we have a cantus twice a year, namely the COdE cantus. That is really the biggest and most fun event at the informal level. The members who have been very active within Asset then get something back from us for their hard work. Then we have a gala every year, various parties and an internal football match between the departments. That battle is heated, but very fun. At the departmental level, you have a lot of events that are only focused on a certain study."

WHAT TYPIFIES AN ASSET MEMBER?

"That varies a lot. For example, we have board members who are members of a student association and a fraternity. They fully enjoy student life. However, there are also plenty of people who are very focused on the business side. So they are more in the formal committee. In that respect, there is not really a typical Asset member. Everyone is free to do what he or she wants. Whatever you fancy, you'll find the connection."

"Everything is allowed and possible with us, but you have to do it yourself. There is every opportunity and space, but you also have to put energy into it."

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PUB?

"In the Vrienden van Tilburg we have our own pub. There we also have our own committee that taps the beers, namely the 'Friends of Asset'. From time to time we organise parties there."

"Three times a year we have a big party there. The best thing is definitely the 'Asset Café'. The café is open every Monday. There are special beers on tap for only €2. So the prices are really good if you are an Asset member. It is really great fun there.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PASSIVE AND ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP?

"Membership with Asset is highly recommended. You only pay €15 once a year and for that you receive an Asset pass. With that pass you can get a lot of discounts in Tilburg."

"As a passive member you can actually go to all parties, except the COdE. As a passive member you don't really do something besides being a member, but you can be present."

"Active members are in committees. The only real difference with passive members is that active members can attend the COdE cantus as a thank-you gift and of course they are in the committees. Apart from that, you notice that the active members really build a group of friends. It is a close group of friends. For example, you really go on weekends with them. It also doesn't feel obligatory. You do what you want and what you feel like doing. With the active membership, you really make friends!

WITH THE ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP YOU REALLY MAKE FRIENDS FOR LIFE!

HOW DO YOU LIKE THE MANAGEMENT YEAR SO FAR?

"It is a lot of fun. It really does involve a lot of work. You actually work 40 hours a week at the office, but in the evening you are also busy with Asset. So it is a week of more than 40 hours, but I must say that it is a great deal of fun. The evenings are not compulsory, so you can also keep it to 40 hours a week."

"Speaking for myself, it's a really enjoyable year. You start in the summer holidays and you are really thrown in at the deep end. You have a lot of energy and want to pick up everything. Besides, you immediately make new friends. I really like the balance between business and informal life."

"The advantage of Asset is that every department has its own board, but it is also very nice to work together with those boards! We are all on the same corridor and floor. It is sometimes hard work, but also very convivial!"

WHAT ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS IN A YEAR?

"The COdE is really one of the best things! For everyone within Asset. Besides, personally, it's really the first time you're setting up a formal event. If that goes well, then that's really cool to experience."

"Also, the pre-carnival party is really a highlight. There were far more registrations than usual. It was super busy! We really liked that. On the formal side, highlights are really when you make strategic choices with your board. You put in a lot of hours. If the choices then turn out well, that's really cool to see."

"In addition, we always find it very cool to see certain things we say back at the university. You have a kind of influence. That is really nice. Our opinion is taken into account. You come into contact with people higher up. Normally, you don't come into contact with them so quickly. Now you do. That's cool."

WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

"Asset in 5 years is still one of the largest in Europe if it is up to us. The faculty is growing, so we want to grow with it. New courses are being added. We also want to respond to that. Growth, in other words. It is important, however, that this growth is sustainable. We have to be able to offer something to the students.

"We would also like to have a larger COdE cantus, for example. It is now held every year at Vidar and that is very nice, but it is simply too small. There are waiting lists. So a bigger COdE would be cool."

"For the rest, it all goes well in my opinion. It is important what the student wants. We can have an ambition, but in the end we mainly want to respond to the need that is there. I think sustainable growth is just the most important thing."
