Tilburg University Cantus

On October 13, 2021, the time had finally come: the Tilburg University Cantus. After a canceled edition in 2020 and the rescheduling of the '2021 edition,' it was finally time to close the social year. The students who have dedicated themselves to Tilburg's society were eagerly looking forward to this day. It was allowed again and it was a great success! The 'cantus' is therefore a symbolic thank you for the massive commitment of the students. And what kind of commitment! Activities include a table football tournament at Philadelphia, 013 normally asks for volunteers for Woohah and Roadburn, and Stichting Stadsbomen has projects around the greening of the city, where all help is welcome. So these are real Tilburg initiatives. We spoke with the organization of the TUC, a beer cantus that is highly committed to helping the society of Tilburg.

WHAT IS THE UNDERLYING IDEA OF THE TUC?

"The organization of the TUC tries to stimulate and partly facilitate social activities of the Tilburg student throughout the year. As a thank you for all the efforts for the Tilburg society, the Tilburg Unversity Cantus is organized."

HOW DOES THE SOCIAL YEAR WORK?

"The TUC has a number of social partners such as Serve the City, MOVE, 'Stichting Stadsbomen', 013 and Philadelphia. They are contacted to set something up together, to stimulate the social activities of Students in Tilburg in an accessible way. Then you start promoting it on your website and approach the associations: "Know that the TUC is coming and you should have done your social actions". Especially after that, you notice that students get more involved."

WHAT IS THE TUC FOR TILBURG DAY?

"Initially, the TUC only organized the cantus itself. So - in our opinion - there was too much focus on that because the TUC is much more than just a cantus. If you have a nice counterpart: an event where the social is central, then you expand the organization and visibility a bit again. On that day, 200 students committed themselves to the Tilburg society. It's great to be able to reflect on social activities all together on the same day."

HOW DO YOU LOOK BACK ON THE EVENTFUL YEAR? WHAT HAVE BEEN THE CHALLENGES?

"In November 2020, you started with nothing, because everything was standing still. You were working towards something, of which you had no idea if it would actually become something. Meanwhile, it was heading in the right direction and there was a green light, but that didn't last for long. For that reason, we moved it to the 13th of October and it was very nice that it finally went ahead!"

One, two, three...Roll up your sleeves!

Mayor 'Theo Weterings' and Rector Magnificus of Tilburg University 'Wim van de Donk' were both present at the cantus and, prior to the actual start, gave another wonderful talk about the student's efforts, the main message of which was, "Thank you for your efforts, enjoy tonight, cheers!" The numbers, then, do not lie:

  • 2750 visitors at the cantus;
  • 1748 students committed to the society of Tilburg;
  • More than €13,000 was raised for charity;
  • Close to 10,000 people reached.
